Our aim is simply to offer one of the best venues for fencers in UK. We hope to offer all the facilities required for those trying fencing for the first time, right up to international competitors. To do this The Academy offers more than a couple of pistes. We have put together a venue including strength and conditioning equipment, armoury, training pistes, social spaces and, of course, numerous full-sized metallic competition pistes.
Cardiff Academy of Fencing is owned and operated by Russell Swords, a Cardiff based fencing club who have run sessions all over South Wales. The concept of the academy is to offer a permanent home to the Russell Sword club sessions, avoiding the uncertainty of operating in public sports centres. The Academy is designed to offer excellent training facilities, specifically tailored to fencers and is one of only a handful of such venues in the entire UK.
The Academy is in use 7 days a week offering strength and conditioning or private lessons in the day and club sessions in the evenings. In addition to practical-fencing courses we run courses on refereeing (where you can qualify as a level 1 or 2 referee) and amoury. The Academy also hosts a range of competitions throughout the year, details of which you can find on our Events Page.
The social aspect of the sport is also central to our vision, our cafe area encourages fencers, parents, and coaches to socialise and get involved with the club. We also run events throughout the year including: Christmas party, fund raisers for members attending the Junior Commonwealth Games, games evenings, and fetes.
Our plans for Cardiff Academy of Fencing are large and open ended. However, what is clear is that we want to develop an academy built on both competitive and social success. We want to see more members of The Academy competing at the highest of levels but we also want to create a place where families feel as much a part an integral part as the fencers themselves. We will always be as happy to welcome a social fencer as the world number one.
