On Friday 15th May the Cardiff Academy of Fencing was officially opened by the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Cardiff Councillor Margaret Jones. Members, parents, family, friends from other clubs and representatives from Welsh Fencing also joined us for the celebration held at the new sale and were treated to demonstration fights by the club’s most successful youth fencers. There were nibbles and Bucks fizz being served by our Commonwealth-selected athletes who were congratulated for their success by the Lord Mayor and consort who were very interested in the sport and what makes it so fun.

After a tour of the fantastic facilities the Lord Mayor unveiled the plaque to a round of applause, and head coach Peter Russell spoke about the importance of this moment and what it means for fencing in Wales. He announced that any Welsh fencer would always be welcome, and that this was a facility for Wales, not just Russell Swords. A toast was then made by development coach Fran Whalley to the future success of fencing in Wales. The Mayor was thanked and presented with a bouquet of flowers.
